Geographical Information System (GIS)

GIS provides an integrated framework for spatial data to be displayed on maps, tables or graphics. The system was developed in 2006 with funding from the International Development Research centre (IDRC). The system provides:

  • Information on the spread of communications networks and infrastructure (fixed line, cellular, postal and broadcasting) in the country.
  • The system is arranged in layers that consist of various data, e.g. population distribution, learning institutions, health facilities, transportation, electricity network and land cover.
  • The GIS is used for:
    • Analyzing spatial data and displaying relationships thus enabling users in designing intervention mechanisms for service provision.
    • Generation of input for the implementation strategy for the Universal access obligations.
    • Aid in routing the National Backbone fibre Network in Kenya.
