The Kenya Communications (Amendment) Act, 2009, vests CCK with the responsibility of facilitating the development of e-commerce in the country. This responsibility entails:

  • Fostering e-commerce through the use of electronic signatures to lend authenticity and integrity to correspondence in any electronic medium.
  • Promoting and facilitating efficient delivery of public sector services by means of reliable electronic records
  • Developing a sound framework to minimize incidences of forged electronic records and fraud in electronic commerce and other electronic transactions.
  • Promote public confidence in the integrity and reliability of electronic records and electronic transactions.

The Act vests CCK will the responsibility of licensing:

  1. operation of electronic certification systems ; and
  2. updating a repository or administering a sub-domain of the Kenya country Top Level domain(dot ke ccTLD)
